Water & electricity
Fresh water is made from the sea and power runs partly on wind — utilities on Bonaire work a little differently. Here’s what to know.
Bonaire’s water and electricity are supplied by the island utility, WEB Bonaire, with power generated by ContourGlobal from a hybrid wind-and-diesel plant with battery storage. Drinking water is produced by reverse-osmosis desalination and is safe from the tap. Because energy is relatively costly, solar is widespread.
Getting connected
When you buy or rent, transfer or open the water and electricity account in your name with WEB (an application form plus documents; a deposit applies). WEB schedules a site review, quotes any connection cost, and installs the meter — including prepaid "Pagabon" meters. Excavation or civil work extends the timeline. If a property has a cistern, you may combine mains water with rainwater or tanker supply.
Tariffs — and why solar pays off
Maximum tariffs are set annually by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). As of 1 January 2026 the standard electricity rate is about $0.39/kWh (prepaid "Pagabon" about $0.74/kWh) and water about $4.48 per m³ plus a fixed monthly fee — with a large share of the electricity price driven by fuel costs. High tariffs make solar PV, solar water heating and batteries genuinely economic here. When viewing a property, ask about existing solar capacity, the cistern and the condition of connections — they materially affect running costs.
