Insurance on Bonaire spans the essentials of daily life and the specific risks of a Caribbean island. Some cover is legally required, some is a condition of your mortgage, and some is simply prudent. Sort it early — especially home insurance, which lenders require before completion.

The main types of cover

Most households on Bonaire arrange:

  • Health insurance — residents are enrolled in the public scheme (ZJCN); expats and non-residents often add private or international cover.
  • Home (buildings/opstal) and contents (inboedel) insurance — usually required by a mortgage lender; check storm and natural-disaster inclusions.
  • Vehicle insurance — third-party liability (WA) is mandatory to drive; add Casco for own-vehicle damage.

Storm and hurricane cover

Bonaire lies on the southern edge of the hurricane belt and is hit far less often than islands to the north, but wind and heavy rain still occur.
