Finding your neighborhood
The island is small, but each area has its own character — from the walkable capital to hillside estates and quiet inland villages. Here is how to choose.
Bonaire is compact enough to cross in under an hour, so no neighborhood is truly remote. Historically the island had six villages — Antriol, Nikiboko, Noord Saliña, Playa, Tera Kora and Rincon — and all but Rincon grew together to form today’s Kralendijk. The choice is really about lifestyle: walkable town, a hillside sea view, coastal chic, or space and quiet inland.
Kralendijk, Belnem & the coast
Kralendijk (its centre is known as Playa) is the capital and the island’s hub — the boulevard and seafront, most shops, restaurants, businesses and public buildings. Living in or near the centre means walkability and a lively feel. South of the airport, Belnem is a sought-after, newer residential area near the west-coast dive sites, with upscale sub-areas such as La Palma, Sabal Palm, Lima and Punt Vierkant. North of Playa, Hato is a coastal strip known for condominium complexes.
Hillside & sea-view living
Santa Barbara sits on a hill in the north of Kralendijk — peaceful, sought-after and upscale, with spacious lots and villas (named sub-developments like Crown Heights appear here). Just north along the coast, Sabadeco — its name an abbreviation of the original developer, Santa Barbara Development Corporation — is known for spacious oceanfront villas. If a wide ocean vista matters most, this is where to look.
Inland & local villages
Nikiboko and Antriol are the most populous districts — more than half of Kralendijk’s residents live there — and are predominantly local and residential, generally offering more space and lower prices than the waterfront. Tera Kora (“red soil”) and Noord Saliña are older, local neighborhoods. Rincon, in the northern hills about 20 minutes from Kralendijk, is Bonaire’s oldest village (founded around 1527) — secluded, historic, and with views of both coasts.
